Experience and learn during the National School Breakfast
During National School Breakfast Week, the combination of experiencing and learning takes centre stage. With the breakfast package, you can enjoy a nutritious breakfast together in the classroom one morning: a great opportunity to discover new, healthy eating habits. The breakfast package is delivered to the school and consists of products from the Wheel of Five: wholemeal bread, fruit, eggs, semi-skimmed dairy products and more.
Having breakfast together in the classroom is not only sociable, but also a great opportunity to introduce children to healthy products and breakfast habits. Seeing others eat encourages eating: when pupils see their classmates try something new, they are often more inclined to try it themselves.
This is how you have a healthy breakfast
Having a healthy breakfast does not have to be complicated or expensive. The School Breakfast website gives parents a few tips for having a healthy breakfast with their child or children and making the right choice.
- Use the Wheel of Five and choose enough from each section. With this tool from the Netherlands Nutrition Centre, you can immediately see whether or not a product fits within the Wheel of Five.
- Have breakfast together at the table—a pleasant moment to set a good example!
- Take your time and pay attention to breakfast. Distractions can make it easy to eat too much. No screen time at breakfast!
Breakfast with the Wheel of Five
A healthy breakfast consists of breakfast products from the Wheel of Five. There are all kinds of options. Wholemeal bread, for example, deliciously topped with low-fat margarine, cheese with 30% fat or less, 100% peanut butter and/or slices of vegetables, fruit or egg. For variety, try a bowl of semi-skimmed yoghurt with a handful of unsalted nuts or fruit (or both!), or a bowl of porridge with pieces of apple. Add something to drink, such as semi-skimmed milk, unsweetened tea or water. There are so many healthy choices!
A few practical tips
- Not always in the mood for the same thing? Alternate between wholemeal bread and semi-skimmed milk with porridge and fruit. And choose a glass of unsweetened tea one day and water the next.
- Take small steps towards a healthier breakfast. Swap your white slice of bread for brown, and brown for wholemeal. Switch from peanut butter to 100% peanut butter, from butter to low-fat margarine, and from egg salad to slices of egg. Every step counts!
- Sweet yet healthy? Try topping bread with strawberries or other (seasonal) fruit.
- Looking for freshness at breakfast? Everyone perks up with fresh tomatoes or slices of cucumber. Delicious with cheese containing 30% fat or less or hummus.
Healthy Breakfast Foundation
The 2026 National School Breakfast is organised by the Healthy Breakfast Foundation. The Healthy Breakfast Foundation promotes healthy breakfast habits among children aged 4–12. It does so by organising national activities such as the National School Breakfast, the Mayors’ Breakfast and the Breakfast Symposium. In addition, the Healthy Breakfast Foundation develops educational teaching materials for schools, based on the guidelines of the Netherlands Nutrition Centre.
