The incentive grant can be used for an activity with the children focused on the theme of food. For example, to get started with vegetable gardening.

Three tips for vegetable gardening

No experience with vegetable gardening and don’t know where to start? Healthy Childcare ambassador Miranda Bron is also a gardening coach and offers these tips:

  • Start small; don’t think too big! For example, you can put potting soil in an empty butter tub and sow some dried pepper seeds in it. Place the tub on a plate and make a few holes in the bottom for excess water. As soon as a plant appears, turn the tub a quarter turn every day so it gets enough daylight.
  • When a seedling has three leaves, you can move it to a larger pot. Once the plant is sturdy enough, it can go outside—or into a larger pot indoors.
  • Try Googling “good neighbours – bad neighbours.” This will tell you which crops do not benefit each other, or which do.
