ROC van Twente has approximately 20,000 students and approximately 2,000 staff members. They are active at around twenty locations, ten of which are larger sites.
Gerald Oude Alink, Healthy School project leader at ROC van Twente, explains the background to placing health and physical activity at the centre: “In 2009, the MBO Council made funding available to reintroduce physical activity into the ROC institutions.
Before 1996, physical education was part of the curriculum for almost every programme. In 1996, however – despite opposition from, among others, physical education teachers – new qualification dossiers were introduced, in which recognisable subjects were not allowed to appear. Instead, all competencies and criteria had to be linked to work processes, and physical education as a subject disappeared.”
