The Netherlands Nutrition Centre is also calling on all schools to pay extra attention to this day themselves. Here are a few ideas:
- Decorate the canteen festively.
- Organize a competition with students, for example to see who can come up with the tastiest sandwich or fruit snack.
- Create a festive sandwich for that day and offer it at a special price.
- Offer free vegetables or fruit. Perhaps you can collaborate with a local supermarket or greengrocer for this.
- Invite the local press to attend the shield presentation.
- Work together with teachers and have them incorporate the topic of nutrition into, for example, a biology or language class.
Would you, as a school, municipality, or other organization, like to contribute to this day, are you looking for additional inspiration, or do you have a great idea you would like to share? Then please contact the Netherlands Nutrition Centre.
History
The Healthy School Canteen program started in 2013. Since then, hundreds of schools have begun making their school canteens healthier. From 2017 through mid-October 2019, 1,290 silver and gold Healthy School Canteen Shields were presented across 699 different school locations. In total, there are 1,855 secondary and vocational education schools in the Netherlands with a counter and/or vending machine. This means that 38% of these schools have a healthier school canteen.
