The magazine begins with an interview with alderman Arjen van Drunen. He has a clear personal motivation: “The Municipality of Breda must make the healthy choice the most logical and easiest choice.” Van Drunen goes on to talk about one of the moments that makes him feel particularly “warm”: 24 May 2023. On that day, Breda received the Golden Carrot for being the most school-garden-friendly municipality in the Netherlands. He explains why this is important, as the effects of gardening at school extend beyond the school grounds: “The children who take part in it proudly tell their parents at home how delicious the tomatoes are that they have grown at school. In this way, the seed that the pupils literally planted continues to grow.”
Interviews
The magazine also includes interviews with:
- Lisette Dirks and Lynn Segers of De Zandberg Catholic primary school about health and learning through movement
- Henk van den Biggelaar of Athletics Association Sprint about the three JOGG-Teamfit badges.
- Kitty Arpat, youth health-care nurse at Jong JGZ, about cooperation with chain partners and the importance of parental involvement.
- Lotti van der Wouden and Manja Leijenhorst of KIK Kinderopvang, about placing a healthy lifestyle at the center from the very beginning.
- Babette Spaargaren of GGD West-Brabant and JOGG coordinator in Breda, and Suzanne van der Ham, JOGG policy adviser at the Municipality of Breda, about the importance of an integrated approach at various levels.
The magazine also focuses on the five themes: Drinking Water, Smoke-Free, Exercise, Greenery and Healthy Nutrition.
Dordrecht magazine
In 2022, Glos Educatief created a similar magazine about 10 years of JOGG in Dordrecht. You can read that magazine here.
Glos Educatief can also create a magazine for your municipality. Interested? Feel free to contact Tilly de Jong of Glos Educatief to learn more about the possibilities: [email protected]; 06-24200333.
