Teaching materials and guest lesson by vocational secondary students

In January 2026, the participating schools started using the teaching materials. This was followed by a practical guest lesson in which vocational secondary students from regional food programs guided the pupils in making their own poké bowl. The ingredients for the poké bowl are sourced through Odin foodcoop from local farms wherever possible. The challenge encourages pupils to make conscious choices: do you choose rice or avocado from far away, or potatoes and pears from nearby?

Foodcamp on a farm

During a subsequent Foodcamp, the pupils visited a nearby farm. There, they harvested crops together with the farmer, took part in a boot camp led by students from regional vocational lifestyle programs and tasted food blindfolded. They also made cheese and a sustainable pizza themselves. It was a unique, active day in which pupils learned by doing.

“As an educational institution, we believe it is important for students to gain practical experience through prevention and educational activities focused on healthy nutrition and lifestyle,” says Noah Schuurman of Landstede Zwolle.

Foodcamps were held for participating schools in Zwolle, Raalte, Nieuwleusen, Kampen, Deventer, Meppel, Hardenberg, Apeldoorn, Emmeloord and Midwolda, as well as an activity day in Haarlem. Pupils and teachers are enthusiastic about the program, which addresses healthy nutrition, physical activity and sustainable food production in a practical way.

For the Foodcamps, we work with qualified farmers from regional Farm Education networks, such as Meesterboer’n, BoerenWijs, Leren bij de boer, De Boer op Noord, Kom bij de Boer and Boerderij in de kijker.

The best poké bowl of 2026

The challenge took place in the provinces of Overijssel, Gelderland, Flevoland, Groningen, Drenthe, Utrecht and North Holland. The competition was won by Dollard College ISK from Winschoten (Groningen). The expert jury, consisting of vocational secondary teachers and Jong Leren Eten ambassadors, explained why: "The Power Crunch Poké Bowl by ISK Dollard College Winschoten is a colorful, creative and well-substantiated meal that combines health, sustainability and flavor. The meal contains a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and whole-grain products. The focus on sustainability through an original variation of animal and plant-based proteins, such as the use of grasshoppers, is particularly strong. However, the question is whether they come from nearby. In addition, they made a very beautiful and original video, in which we hope the pupils themselves played a part."
