Fifth edition of National Outdoor Lesson Day

On 22 September 2020, National Outdoor Lesson Day will take place. Schools can already participate if they give at least one class one hour of outdoor lessons. In the meantime, 3,693 schools have already registered. National Outdoor Lesson Day is an initiative of Jantje Beton and IVN Nature Education.

Fifth edition of National Outdoor Lesson Day

National Outdoor Lesson Day, which is taking place for the fifth time this year, is becoming increasingly popular. The 2020 edition was initially scheduled for 7 April 2020, but was postponed to 22 September 2020 due to coronavirus. While more than 2,700 schools took part in 2019, almost 1,000 more schools have already registered this year, bringing the total to 3,693, at www.buitenlesdag.nl.

Also for secondary education

National Outdoor Lesson Day is not only for primary schools; an increasing number of secondary schools are also taking part. The website features 16 special lessons for secondary education, using the Bosatlas of Sustainability.

Primary education database

The website now has a database containing 70 outdoor lessons for primary education. These can be filtered by grade (1 through 8) and by subject (Homework Assignment, Art Education, Mathematics, Language, World Orientation, Other).

Outdoor lessons popular

Outdoor lessons are popular. This was shown by a 2019 study by ResCon among 400 children. They gave the outdoor lessons an average rating of 8.8. Read the full study here.

The date for the sixth edition is now also known: 13 April 2021.

Our Food Week

From 3 to 10 October 2026, it is Our Food Week. A great opportunity to focus with your class at primary school on where our food comes from, how it is made and why healthy and sustainable choices are important. Food education allows pupils not only to learn, but especially to experience. That is why various organisations are joining forces to support schools with inspiring activities, teaching materials and practical tools. Examples include the Mayors’ Breakfast, a free visit to a farm, or shopping vouchers for cooking in the classroom.
