The Argument Cards help identify what parents consider important for their child by approaching the conversation from the parent’s perspective. This makes conversations between parents and professionals about sports and physical activity more accessible and better aligned with parents’ motivations. Parents indicate which themes, or arguments, they consider important. These may include health, good performance at school or having self-confidence. Sports and physical activity have a positive effect on all of these arguments.

Further development of the Argument Cards

New insights and positive experiences with the Argument Cards in practice prompted their further development. In terms of content, the Argument Cards have been expanded with regard to their scientific basis and the age category to which the cards apply. The Argument Cards are suitable for conversations with parents of children between 2 and 12 years old; previously, this was between 4 and 12. In addition, the arguments were tested among parents in the survey by Opvoedinformatie Nederland and the Knowledge Centre for Sport & Physical Activity. The result is a high-quality discussion tool that aligns with the themes parents value today.

User-friendly and accessible

To make things as easy as possible for professionals in practice, practical adjustments have also been made. For example, a manual is now available to help professionals get started with using the cards. The manual describes various working methods that can be used with the Argument Cards. In addition, each argument includes an explanation of how sports and physical activity contribute to that topic. This scientific basis provides professionals with the knowledge they need to convince parents of the importance of physical activity for their child.

For whom?

The Argument Cards were developed for professionals who talk to parents about the sports and physical activity habits of children between 2 and 12 years old. These include professionals in youth healthcare, childcare, primary education, community sports coaching and paediatric physiotherapy. Interested in the Argument Cards?
