From 2009 through 2018, October 10 was dedicated to sustainability every year. After 10 successful years, Urgenda organized the final edition of this Day of Sustainability in 2018. Not because sustainability is no longer important, but precisely because every day should be a day of sustainability. To continue giving it some extra attention on October 10, the Leren voor Morgen cooperative is facilitating the Day of Sustainability in Education this year. Leren voor Morgen is a group of collaborating organizations committed to learning for sustainable development: both within and outside the education system, from toddlers to professionals.
During the Day of Sustainability for Education, attention will be paid to various activities, such as the Reading Aloud Campaign, Sustainable Teacher 2019, and Spark the Movement.
Reading Aloud Campaign
As part of the Reading Aloud Campaign, teachers read the story ‘Sem and Saar Give Positive Energy’ (see opening photo) to children. Afterwards, they discuss the Children’s Global Goals, the seven sustainable global goals. In this way, children learn about the seventeen ‘adult’ Sustainable Development Goals in an accessible manner.
Sustainable Teacher and the SDGs
As a Sustainable Teacher, you work on sustainability in education. In doing so, you give practical substance to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a better world in 2030. More precisely, to target 4.7. In appreciation, we send every Sustainable Teacher an SDG pin. By wearing it, you show that you are an ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals. You can then be recognized by your enthusiasm for what the world could look like in 2030. Wear it with pride!
If, as a Sustainable Teacher, you want to do more with the SDGs, it is good to know that we in education stand for SDG4 (access to and quality of education) and that we seek collaboration in this area (SDG17). From here, you can make connections with all subjects, municipalities, businesses, etc. to work on the other SDGs. As a school, you can also choose to select one or more goals, in addition to SDG4 and SDG17, to which you will contribute. You can find a good UNESCO publication on learning objectives and SDG4 here.
