Cooking in the classroom at two Frisian primary schools

On 18 June, pupils from groups 7 and 8 at Kindcentrum De Wel in Broeksterwâld took part. Under the guidance of chef Jeannette Nieuwenhuis, the children prepared the ‘Extraordinary Bean Burger’. RTV NOF has written a lovely article about this and made a video as well:

Jong Leren Eten Friesland itself visited OBS De Ynset in Rottum on 19 June. What a wonderful experience it was to be there! Part of the school had been transformed into a real cooking studio, and the children enthusiastically got to work. In small groups, they worked together towards one goal: making the tastiest and most beautiful burgers. Everyone had their own task: they chopped, mashed, stirred and fried, and a homemade sauce was not to be left out either. And of course, they cleaned up too – because that is also part of cooking. It was wonderful to see how much fun the children had and how much collaboration emerged within the groups. The result? Beautiful burgers full of fresh ingredients – and pride. The children proudly showed off their creations and could not wait to taste them. Just look at the photos – they really say it all!

Cooking in the classroom is part of Smaaklessen

Cooking in the classroom is a fun, practical addition to the Smaaklessen curriculum. While Smaaklessen allows children to discover how food works in a playful way – from tasting and smelling to making healthy choices – Cooking in the classroom brings this knowledge to life in practice. A real chef comes into the classroom and lets the pupils get to work with fresh ingredients themselves. This connects theory and practice in a delicious way. Children not only experience what healthy food is, but also how fun and tasty it can be to make it themselves.
