Comprehensive programme

This comprehensive programme consists of various (recognised) interventions that have been specifically developed or adapted for students in special primary and secondary education and practical education. In consultation with the school and based on a school scan, a customised programme is created using a mix of the programme lines/interventions below:

  • Healthy Heroes: nutrition education combined with cooking workshops (including the recognised interventions: FitGaaf!, Smaakmissies, Smaaklessen, Moestuinieren and Krachtvoer
  • Sport Heroes: more exercise at school, discovering new sports and sports programmes
  • Art Heroes: music and creative workshops
  • Ik ben P.A: preparing for (voluntary) work and connecting with practical placements through Team 12

To ensure that the programmes can be implemented effectively, Special Heroes offers a diverse range of professional development for teachers, lifestyle professionals and providers of sports, culture and work-experience placements. To reinforce the programme, schools can also participate in Special Heroes’ Vita on Tour and events.

Project organisation

Special Heroes takes the organisation of the activities listed above out of the school’s hands by appointing a project manager and providing materials. The project manager works with a project team consisting of the school (including a student!), the (guest) teacher(s), the municipality, possibly supplemented by the Healthy School, GGD or JOGG. The project manager from Special Heroes Netherlands coordinates the project and ensures sustainable integration within the school and region over a period of 2–3 years. They are responsible for the results, oversee monitoring and evaluation, and connect activities with local organisations.

Costs

The costs of the comprehensive programme consist of project management, teacher training, materials, monitoring, communication resources and the costs of hiring guest teachers, and are proportional to the number of participating classes/students.

The school can include these costs in its NPO application. In some regions and cities, municipalities contribute (partly) to the costs of hiring guest teachers and sports/cultural providers. Based on the school scan and an initial meeting, the Special Heroes project manager prepares a customised quotation. On average, the annual cost is €90–100 per student for 2–3 programmes.

How Special Heroes Netherlands works at school and in the region

Together with the school and local partners, Special Heroes promotes a healthy lifestyle for all students. First, Special Heroes initiates the project, leads the project team and sets the process in motion. Next, Special Heroes implements the comprehensive programme developed specifically for the target group and embeds it in the region. Figure 1 shows what this looks like in practice.

In short

On the one hand, Special Heroes offers a comprehensive programme based on the school scan and the wishes of the school, while on the other hand, Special Heroes takes the project organisation off the school’s hands. Wherever possible, Special Heroes carries out the programme together with local providers.
