During the IVN Ditch Days, IVN Nature Education works together with the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO KNAW) to conduct research into Dutch ditches. IVN and NIOO KNAW started this in 2018 and will continue it during the upcoming Ditch Days. Once they know more about the condition of our ditches, they can also see where and how improvements are needed.
When we look at the aquatic animals observed, last year's number one, the water boatman, once again scores highly. This time, however, it is involved in a neck-and-neck race with the water mite, which finished only in fifth place last year. Snails (both pond snails and ramshorn snails), damselfly larvae, backswimmers, freshwater woodlice and worms are also scoring highly this year.
