How can you make vegetable gardening effective?

Research has shown that vegetable gardening can have positive effects on children's behaviour. But how can you organise it for the greatest impact? The Model Intervention School Gardening is a good example. Although these guidelines were developed for grades 5 through 8, the tips can also be applied to grades 1 through 4:

  • Location: Provide a practical, educational and accessible school garden in the open air.
  • Guidance: Arrange expert support from teachers, volunteers and/or gardening experts.
  • Activities: Provide 10–12 varied lessons and gardening activities that align with children's experiences and in which children play an active role in sowing, caring for and harvesting different crops.
  • Consider children's wishes and needs: To keep children motivated, it is important to find a good balance between activities that children really enjoy and those they enjoy less. In addition, add colour to the garden and give children who appreciate it gloves to work in the garden.
