Healthy Heroes is a programme for schools in special primary education and secondary special education, focusing on nutrition and health. In a fun, interactive way, SHN teaches children and young people to become aware of the importance of healthy nutrition and the positive effects of a healthy lifestyle. The further development of the programme has been made possible in part by funding from a number of foundations, including the RVVZ Fund of Menzis, and by the sharing of knowledge about the programme through funding from the national prevention agreement of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, aimed at creating a healthier Netherlands. The programme takes a preventive approach to health by promoting healthy eating and a healthier environment, and by making sports and physical activity more appealing.
Healthy Heroes Menu
As part of the Healthy Heroes programme, schools can choose from a menu offering activities on the themes of healthy nutrition, lifestyle, movement skills and measuring is knowing. To achieve a lasting impact for children and schools, we work on the basis of at least two health programmes per school year, each lasting an average of six to eight weeks. The needs of the children and the school are central to this, and SHN continues to develop the Healthy Heroes programme accordingly.
With the Healthy Heroes programme, SHN is committed to embedding a healthy culture within the school and raising awareness among children (and parents) about a healthy lifestyle, enabling them to organise and maintain it independently in the long term.
Jong Leren Eten Grant
Jong Leren Eten is a programme in which the national government, provinces, education institutions and civil society organisations work together. Their ambition is to make children and young people (aged 0–18) ‘food literate’ in childcare and educational settings. Schools can apply for grants for activities such as vegetable gardening, cooking or a guest lesson on nutrition. Schools can use this grant for a number of options from the Healthy Heroes menu.
Stichting Special Heroes Nederland has great confidence in the new Healthy Heroes programme and is eager to take on the challenge of creating a healthier Netherlands for children and young people with disabilities!
