Iris Kummeling, programme manager: “With the Healthy School approach, schools can work structurally and across the entire school on a healthy lifestyle. This increases the likelihood of a lasting effect. The large number of applications once again shows that schools are eager to do this. And it is urgently needed: recent research among young people shows that their health is vulnerable. We are seeing an increase in unhealthy behaviour, including smoking and vaping, and problematic social media use. Young people’s mental health has also not yet recovered from the coronavirus pandemic. Schools can play an important role here by teaching children and young people about, and allowing them to experience, how healthy choices and a healthy lifestyle really do make a difference, both now and in the future.”
Information and inspiration for all schools
Iris calls on schools to continue working on a healthy lifestyle for their pupils and students, even if they do not receive the additional incentive. Iris: “We are also happy to help these schools start or continue working on a healthy lifestyle. To this end, we provide a great deal of information, inspiration and materials on Gezondeschool.nl and gezondeschool.nl/inspiratie. In addition, in the coming school year we will expand our offerings for all schools, including those without a scheme. This will include training and online information sessions. This will enable all schools to further strengthen the health of their pupils and students.”
